Refusing to remember: The unintended consequences of government mandates
The American philosopher George Santayana said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I think we can also add to this quote, “as well as those who refuse to remember it.” There are many today who fall into this second category.
In a recent post on the American Thinker blog, the writer Dennis Lund, discusses how our current administration is very similar to the King of England, when the American colonies decided to form their own nation. He looks at the grievances which are outlined in the “Declaration of Independence” and taken from Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense”.
Here are just two of the points made in the American Thinker post:
“[E]rected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people“ – Obamacare provides for 16,000 new IRS agents to ensure our obedience. The president has appointed 43 “czars” of which 33 were not subject to Senate approval. The EPA is now used as a tool to punish enemies of the state such as Arch Coal, BP and Shell.
“[I]mposing Taxes on us without our Consent” — ObamaCare was passed against the will of the people on the grounds that it was not a tax, the Supreme Court ruled otherwise, resulting in celebrations by the statists. The law was not even read by many members of Congress who voted to impose their will upon us.
Like King George, King Obama is imposing his rule upon us at every turn. Who knows what other mandates like Obamacare are on the horizon.
There were 28 principles which our Founding Fathers were guided by when they wrote the Constitution. These 28 principles were agreed on by all and these defined our nation. One of these principles is as follows:
Principle 15 - The highest level of prosperity occurs when there is a free-market economy and a minimum of government regulations.
Prosperity depends upon a climate of wholesome stimulation with four basic freedoms in operation:
1. The Freedom to try.
2. The Freedom to buy.
3. The Freedom to sell.
4. The Freedom to fail. – From “Learn the Constitution”
The freedom to buy, the freedom to sell, two keys to the free enterprise system. Obamacare takes these freedoms away from the American citizen. This flies in the face of what the Founding Fathers believed and it is why we cannot let this happen again. We need a Mandate Amendment to the Constitution. We must stop any more government mandates.
“Perhaps the sentiments contained in the following pages, are not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favour; a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.” Thomas Paine “Common Sense”

Thank you for discussing my piece. I believe it important to spread the word as much as possible on the topic of increased tyranny from the government.
Dennis, thank you so much for your contribution and your comment. We agree that some fear such topics or believe such a world could never come to America, but it can. We truly believe that the Mandate Amendment, albeit not the total solution, gives a fighting chance for future generations to move ever closer back to the values our country was founded.
John,
I agree. To be honest this is the first I have heard of the “mandate Amendment”. The more I have thought on this, the more I like the idea.
I am contemplating a piece on this for my local paper and would like to exchange e-mails with you on the subject, as I think that would be a more appropriate forum vs. this format.
Regards
Dennis
Dennis,
We are fairly new and have been quiet until now. John will be in touch with you, you can email him at john@mandateamendment.com.

Wow, a lofty goal Mangus! I can see the wisdom in the effort to remove these Amendments. If it was achieved, would it prevent or diminish the “logic” used by Roberts in his Obamacare decision? The Right to tax will still exist, albeit not by way of an income tax. I am interested in your thoughts regarding this.
We believe that the Mandate Amendment effort, although very difficult, is achievable and would lay the foundation for future generations to continue the fight. The first battle that needs to be fought and won is the battle against government and corporations combing power to force their will upon us. That is what the Mandate Amendment will achieve.
We should consider combining efforts, what do you think? Email me directly: John@mandateamendment.com
Come join the fun.
IMO the Roberts decision is a flat out usurpation . . The tax codes are still required to pass the Article I Section 8 enumerated powers [without usurped expansions of clauses by the Congress and the courts]- The Marbury V Madison was a wrong decision giving powers to the court by the court it self. Well outside of the Article III limits on the Judiciary. Then McCullough V Maryland that expanded the use and powers by usurping the clauses and ignoring the actual enumerated powers.
The Constitution is a limit on Government branches not a power granting document.
Exactly. The Constitution grants rights to *government* – our rights are natural and self evident. It is insane that today we have to beg and plea for every right. . . . And if it can’t be stretched from 10 little amendments, then we are told it may very well not be a right! Just complete stupidity.
I got your email and I’ll respond back. Thank you so much for contacting us.
WE the people granted the Government under the Constitution certain rights and powers but we limited those Powers under Article I section 8 – they have no power outside those 17 items of grant.
